Mountain Ranch

Mountain Ranch, in Calaveras County, California, is our town; it is a couple of miles away from Cerro Lindo. The town itself has a general store, a post office, a gas station, a bar, a small restaurant, two realtors, a community hall, a park, a couple of small churches, and a few houses. It sits in a very sparsely populated and beautiful area of the California Sierra foothills, at an elevation of approximately 2150 ft. The surrounding area is mostly rural residential. There are a few small vineyards, farms, and ranches. Some residents raise a variety of livestock, from chickens to cows. Many of us are just content to live our retirement in the serene and seasonally changing beautiful environment that the Sierra foothills provide.

The physical description, however, does not fully reveal all the joys of living here. Mountain Ranch and its surroundings also provide a wonderful community. It is a small community, obviously, but with the best of the old fashioned frontier attitudes. Yes, gossip travels faster than light, but we have a live and let live approach. Still, neighbors are there for each other when needed and there are social groups that regularly gather to share common interests. These groups range from informal coffee get-togethers to scheduled meetings of community organizations.

Calaveras County

We are near the geographic center of Calaveras County, one of the most rural counties in California. The county has only one incorporated city: Angels Camp. The county seat, San Andreas, is just an unincorporated town. The county's diversity defies a simple coherent description. Most of its area is rural, but there are population centers. Most is mountainous, but the western end is a little more like the flat rural California central valley; the county's elevations range from about 200 ft. to almost 8000 ft. The economy includes farming, wine making, bedroom communities, retirement communities, tourism, and more. The people and culture are also quite diverse.

Among the things that the county offers to visitors are:

Access to a ski resort area via beautiful California Highway 4.

Lots of quiet and beautiful back roads and small towns.

Wineries with attractive tasting rooms and nicely landscaped grounds.

California Gold Rush sites and tourist attractions.

Natural caves sites, some designated as California Historical sites.

The Calaveras County Fair with its celebrated jumping frog contest (Thank you, Mark Twain).
